Decentraland’s four-day Metaverse Fashion Week began on March 24 promising to showcase a stellar virtual list of global labels.
The first-of-its-kind Metaverse Fashion Week is hosting shows and digital experiences through a four-day event from March 24-28.
The Metaverse Fashion Week is hosted on the virtual platform Decentraland, where an attendee’s 3D avatar can browse through plots of ‘land’ for sale. Decentraland uses MANA cryptocurrency and is powered by the Ethereum blockchain.
For its debut year, the event has devoted digital spaces which will be accessible to all visitors who can participate in panel talks, shopping experiences, runway shows, and after-parties. Designers at the event include Jonathan Simkhai, Mowalola, and Collina Strada.
The event was opened yesterday evening by British department store Selfridges which in early 2022 announced an NFT collaboration with the estate of Victor Vasarely and Paco Rabanne. It featured new artistic works and digital renditions of young Rabanne’s first 12 ‘Unwearable’ dresses originally created in 1966.
The four-day event is hosted on Decentraland, a virtual platform whereby your 3D avatar can traverse vast digital plains, purchasing plots of ‘land’ as NFTs (the science part: Decentraland utilizes MANA cryptocurrency and is powered by the Ethereum blockchain).
For the purposes of Metaverse Fashion Week – this year in its debut, though designers from Jonathan Simkhai to Mowalola and Collina Strada have previously shown on other metaverse platforms.
Decentraland has created a number of devoted digital spaces, accessible to all, whereby visitors can participate not just in runway shows but panel talks, shopping experiences, even ‘after-parties’.
These colorful backdrops are influenced in their design by the longtime fashion capitals, drawing a link between past and future – the ‘Luxury District’, for example, recalls the architecture of Paris’ storied Avenue Montaigne, albeit rendered in futuristic style.
Peppered in between these designer experiences is a fashion week staple: after-parties, including performances by meta performers and real-life (!) artists, including Grimes. The metaverse-savvy singer is poised to be closing digital fashion house Auroboros’ MVFW show with a DJ set in the finale of Fashion Week inside Decentraland’s Luxury Fashion District.
The most striking part of Metaverse Fashion Week extravaganza is how it differs from fashion week in reality. Within the digital ecosystem, anyone can attend, paving the path to eliminating exclusivity and allowing more fashion enthusiasts to experience something entirely new.
At MVFW, the digital fashion house The Fabricant will showcase designs such as its Hemdrok Jacket and Nehalennia Drop suit, a long-sleeved leotard.
In the open-access spirit of Decentraland, the brand has invited attendees to submit their own reworked designs of The Fabricant’s Season 1 range in their own fabric and color combinations. Six winning creations will be selected for the runway via a public vote.
