A man is in police custody after an hours-long manhunt near the Chicago suburb of Highland Park where a deadly shooting took place during an Independence Day parade.
Police arrested a 22-year old man suspected in a deadly shooting at a July 4th parade in Highland Park, a suburb of the US city of Chicago, police said.
The man was “taken into custody without incident” after he was spotted driving on a highway near Chicago, police told the Chicago Sun-Times.
The shooting happened at around 10:14 am (GMT 3:14 pm) just after the parade had started at 10:00 am. The parade was halted following the shooting.
People reportedly abandoned their blankets, infant strollers, chairs, and other belongings to save their life. As per these eyewitnesses, who returned to the sight to retrieve their items, shared the horror that some were running visibly bloodied following the violence.
Authorities have identified one Robert “Bobby” E Crimo as a “person of interest”. The police have taken him into custody. He was arrested after a short pursuit, not very far from the parade route.
The suspect is a 22-year-old white male. The motive of the suspect Crimo is not yet known and the police are considering it to be a random act of violence.
The July 4 shooting was just the latest to shatter the rituals of American life. Schools, churches, grocery stores and now community parades have all become killing grounds in recent months. This time, the bloodshed came as the nation tried to find cause to celebrate its founding and the bonds that still hold it together.
“It is devastating that a celebration of America was ripped apart by our uniquely American plague,” Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said at a news conference.
“I’m furious because it does not have to be this way… while we celebrate the Fourth of July just once a year, mass shootings have become a weekly — yes, weekly — American tradition.”
Won’t Stop Fighting “Gun Violence Epidemic”, Says Biden After US Shooting
US President Joe Biden pledged Monday to keep fighting to end the “epidemic” of gun violence in America after a deadly mass shooting at a July 4th parade in a Chicago suburb.
Biden said he and his wife Jill were “shocked by the senseless gun violence that has yet again brought grief to an American community on this Independence Day,” after six people were killed in the carnage in Highland Park, Illinois.
“I’m not going to give up fighting the epidemic of gun violence,” he said, noting he had signed the first significant gun control measures in decades into law in late June, but that “much more work” remains.
