President Joe Biden warned that “equality and democracy are under assault” in the United States, saying that former President Donald Trump and extremist “MAGA Republicans” threaten the foundations of the country.
On Thursday, President Biden gave a speech in Philadelphia, the cradle of US democracy, where he launched an extraordinary assault on Republicans who embrace Trump’s “Make America Great Again” ideology.
He urged his supporters to fight back against what he called “extremists.” Speaking near the spot where the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were adopted more than two centuries ago, Biden thundered, “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.”
Biden cautioned that “MAGA forces are determined to take this country backward. Backward to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love.” He called on Americans across the political divide, and specifically mainstream Republicans, to come out in defense of the country’s democracy, which he said could not be guaranteed. “For a long time, we’ve reassured ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed. But it is not,” Biden said. “We have to defend it. Protect it. Stand up for it. Each and every one of us.”
In his speech, Biden repeatedly called out Trump, saying that blind loyalty to a single leader and a willingness to engage in political violence is fatal to democracy.
He clarified that not every Republican is a MAGA Republican and that not every Republican shares their extreme ideology. Alleging that MAGA Republicans do not respect the Constitution and want to take the country backwards, Biden called them “insurrectionists and election deniers” who “embrace anger and thrive on chaos.” He alleged that MAGA Republicans are a “clear and present danger to our democracy.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised Biden for his inspiring and optimistic remarks in which he made it crystal clear that their rights and freedom are on the line. “In the Congress and across the country, extreme MAGA Republicans are orchestrating a sinister campaign. From criminalizing women’s healthcare to ending Social Security and Medicare to undermining our elections, the GOP is working to turn back the clock on many of our most fundamental liberties while fanning the flames of violence and division,” Pelosi said.
Biden said that MAGA Republicans do not recognize the will of the people, and “they refuse to accept the results of a free election.” He alleged that they are working right now, as he speaks, in state after state to give the power to decide elections in America to partisans and cronies, empowering election deniers to undermine democracy itself.
Biden also mentioned that Trump supporters thought of the mob who stormed the US Capitol last year as patriots rather than insurrectionists. “They look at the mob that stormed the United States Capitol on January 6th brutally attacking law enforcement, not as insurrectionists who placed a dagger at the throat of our democracy, but as patriots, and they see their MAGA failure to stop a peaceful transfer of power after the 2020 election as preparation for the 2022 and 2024 elections,” Biden said.
