List of Top Indian Origin CEOs in American Companies

After his elevation as the CEO of Twitter, Parag Agrawal has joined the growing power club of Indian-origin executives helming US-based global multinationals. Twitter’s outgoing CEO Dorsey announced on Monday that 37-year old Agrawal, an IIT Mumbai, and Stanford University alumnus, will be the company’s new chief executive as he stepped down after 16 years at the company that he co-founded and helmed.

However, not just Agrawal, but over a dozen people of Indian-origin and Indian-born executives are helming the global multinationals. Let’s take a look at the list of top five companies in which Indian-origin people are currently occupying the top positions.

Sundar Pichai: CEO, Google LLC & Alphabet INC

Pichai Sundararajan is the chief executive officer (CEO) of Alphabet Inc. and its subsidiary Google. Born on 10 June 1972, he earned his degree from IIT Kharagpur in metallurgical engineering and attained an MS from Stanford University in materials science and engineering, and further attained an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was named a Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar, respectively.

Satya Nadella has been the CEO of Microsoft since 2014. He was the third CEO of Microsoft after Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer and has been in the company since 1992. Nadella was born in Hyderabad, Telangana, and received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology in Karnataka, and an MS in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Later, Nadella received an MBA from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.

IBM – Arvind Krishna

Arvind Krishna has been at the helm of IBM since April 2020 and took on the role of Chairman in January 2021. Krishna began his career with IBM in 1990 and was promoted to Senior Vice President in 2015, managing IBM Cloud & Cognitive Software and IBM Research divisions. Krishna was born in Andhra Pradesh and his father was an army officer. In April 2020, Arvind Krishna took over the helm of IBM as the CEO. He had started his career at IBM in 1990. Arvind steered IBM’s largest acquisition of $34 billion of Red Hat.

Adobe – Shantanu Narayen

Shantanu Narayen has been the CEO of Adobe since 2007. He joined the company in 1998 as the Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product development and was in that position until 2001. Until 2005, he was executive VP of worldwide products and was appointed as the COO in the same year, and in 2007, CEO of Adobe. He worked for Apple from 1989 to 1995 in senior management positions.

IIT alumnus Parag Agarwal was appointed as the new CEO of the micro-blogging website, Twitter, in November 2021 after former CEO Jack Dorsey stepped down from the position.  Agarwal has been working for Twitter since 2011 and was appointed the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in 2017.
