US gas prices hit a record high as 10 states pay $5 or more per gallon

The national average for gas prices in the US hit a record $4.865 Monday, and one Northern California station showed a sticker price near $10.

The average gallon of gas today is up 59% compared to one year ago, according to AAA data.

Prices at the pump have hit record after record in recent weeks, and now there are 10 states — including Connecticut, New York, California, among others — paying more than $5 per gallon on average.

The higher prices hit hard in the past week, when Americans hit roads and highways for the Memorial Day holiday travel.

“People are still fueling up, despite these high prices,” AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said in a news release. “At some point, drivers may change their daily driving habits or lifestyle due to these high prices, but we are not there yet.”

Where are the highest gas prices?

Consumers are paying more around the country: no state’s average is below $4.28, according to AAA. Parts of the West, Midwest and Northeast are seeing some of the nation’s highest gas costs.

Here are the 5 states with the highest average gas prices, as of June 6:

• California: $6.34

• Nevada: $5.49

• Hawaii: $5.47

• Oregon $5.41

• Washington $5.40

And in the District of Columbia, the average cost is $5.06, AAA said. The biggest weekly shock came in states such as Michigan, Illinois and Indiana — all of which saw gas rise by more than 40 cents in the past week.

New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts are just pennies away. Georgia is the only state with an average below $4.30 a gallon.

In total, more than one out of every five gas stations nationwide are now charging more than $5 a gallon for regular, and just over half are charging $4.75 or more.

Unfortunately, prices could continue to climb.

Veteran oil analyst Andy Lipow told CNN he expects the national average to hit $5.05 a gallon in the next 10 days.

Oil, the biggest component of gasoline prices, continues to get more expensive — even after OPEC+ announced plans late last week to ramp up production.

Notably, a gas station in Mendocino, California is charging $9.60 for a gallon of gas, and the average price across the state surpassed $6 for the first time ever last weekend. Similarly, another station in Los Angeles just topped $8.

Crude prices have jumped since the European Union announced last Tuesday a partial ban on Russian crude, all while China is showing signs of easing its COVID lockdowns.

Meanwhile, summer driving season is officially underway as of Memorial Day, and JPMorgan previously predicted that a gallon of gas could rise above $6.
