Supporting Change in Business Environment

Supporting Change in Small Business Environment.

“Change is inevitable. Change is constant.”

Each individual involved when organisations or businesses go through the change process, is responsible for effectively responding to the process and supporting it in order for the change to happen without much negative consequences. Each one should be able to identify the reasons for this change and should be able to adapt to the effects of change on one’s own work. Individuals or teams involved in the implementation of the change process should occasionally review the effects of change on employees and processes and then record and analyse the outcomes. You may read about this in detail in my post Responding to Change in Business Environment.

Applying frequent small changes in the business environment will not have a huge serious effect on the employees. In fact, employees should frequently look at ways to improve their performance and skills and be ready to accept and respond to changes as and when they occur. A continuous improvement process helps the members work together towards achieving the goals set for them and keeps the teams working in better coordination.

Effect of Change on Values

Anything new has some possible effect on one’s own values. People develop more skills like team spirit, communication skills, team building skills, interpersonal skills etc. Let us look at some effects that change has on the values of people involved:

It has been studied that when there are genuine contributions from both parts while working on the change process, it develops a stronger connection between the employee and the employer. As discussed before, ongoing improvement is the name of the game, whether you’re a one-person operation or 100-employee company. Businesses cannot be static. A business is like a moon, if it does not increase, it decreases. Your business is either on an upward track or it is on its way down. To make your business better is a conscious choice that you make through consistent improvement. Not only must you balance your time, but you must also choose the right area of business that will make the biggest impact.

This also applies to various other working aspects in the business. The connections you make, will lay foundations for growth of your business as well as employees. This growth will also help the company become more productive as a result of the contribution from all parties. When employees value the ethics of the organisation, that are mutually beneficial, they develop genuine loyalty and respect towards the organization and the employer. When a change brings about a positive result, employees become more enthusiastic and devoted to their work and dedicated to the organisation. This improves interpersonal skills as well.

Supporting Change

It is good for employees to welcome change at workplace and it is the employer’s responsibility to make sure that at least a majority of employees is happy with the change. If a change is not accepted by the majority, it will be very difficult, at times even impossible to yield positive results from an implemented change, and this can cost a lot to the company, in terms of money as well as image. It is important for an employer to make sure that a change has a positive impact on employee morale and helps build mutual trust and commitment between the organisation and the employees. If a change is well-accepted, it-

  • Helps build self-worth in employees
  • Builds team working skills, helps form better relationships with the colleagues, teams and departments
  • Makes the employee feel more committed and respectful towards the company and employer
  • Improves respect for organisational values and culture
  • Supports diversity and perspectives, and
  • Drives better achievements

Here are some benefits of positively responding to change:

  • Better personal management
  • Identifying positives
  • Acquiring new skills
  • Appreciation for support shown towards colleagues and team
  • Possible career progression
  • Individual growth
  • Increased productivity
  • Team cooperation and morale
  • Improved quality and flexibility
